I am increasingly seeing a generation of girls growing up exhausted, anxious, and disconnected from their own bodies and it’s not because they’re doing anything wrong. It’s because the world around them has changed faster than their biology can keep up.

When we step back and look at the whole picture, hormonal health isn’t just about estrogen and progesterone. It’s about the ecosystem those hormones live in — the food, sleep, movement, screens, stress, and chemicals that shape how a young woman’s body functions day to day. And our culture? It isn’t doing us any favours, I can assure you. We have normalized frenetic lifestyles with no down time, huge chemical exposures, not eating whole foods, and all of us are addicted to devices. Our bodies and brains just can’t keep up.

That’s why I talk about the cluster of factors that shape hormonal health — because no single habit explains the symptoms I see. It’s the overlap that matters, and in this visual you can see that we have to unwind some of these pieces, to get back into balance.

The real life case that I showcase here (with permission) highlights this interplay well, and also reveals that while it may seem like a big mess, we can with a bit of know-how and support, unwind things and help our girls reach better health.

Case Study: A 15-Year-Old Rebuilding Her Foundations

She was 15 — bright, athletic, and attending a sports-focused high school. She had a close family, a solid peer group, and a full plate. By all accounts, she was doing everything right.

But her body was saying otherwise.

Her and her mom’s concerns:

- Painful, cystic acne
- Late-night screen time and short sleep
- Erratic eating, heavy on processed food
- Fatigue and worsening mood
- Debilitating cramps and very heavy periods
- In the middle of an ADHD assessment

What We Found

After a full intake, I asked them to keep a food and symptom diary and ordered blood work.

Here’s what came back:

- Anemia
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Low B12
- Early blood sugar dysregulation
- Low progesterone

Her diet told the rest of the story — skipping breakfast, fast food for lunch five days a week, healthy family dinners, and consistent late-night snacking and late bedtime.

This wasn’t pathology; it was a pattern.

Her body wasn’t broken — it was simply polluted, under-fueled and over-stimulated.

The Plan

We started with what mattered most: rebuilding her foundations.

- Protein-forward breakfast every day — to steady energy, mood, and focus.
- Pack leftovers for lunch — real food over fast food.
- Screens off by 9 PM — a non-negotiable. Sleep first, dopamine later. Devices taken from room, so no temptation.
- Targeted nutrients: Vitamin D, B12, omega-3, multi, and iron (with dinner, away from dairy).
- Switch out ALL personal care products for low-tox alternatives (see below for resources)
- Parental support: I advised Mom to join forces with her. They synced breakfast time, took their vitamins together, and built new routines as a team

No detoxes. No extreme protocols. No medications or herbs. Just consistency with a couple new habits.

The Results

6 weeks:

- Acne down by 80%
- PMS and cramps down by 50%
- Mood brighter, sleep deeper
- Focus in school remarkably improved
- Slightly lighter periods

3 weeks:

- Acne down 90%
- PMS down 70%
- No more low mood
- Energy and motivation normalized
- ADHD assessment deferred — symptoms resolved
- Periods lighter and more manageable

The Takeaway

I didn’t reach for herbs, medications or hormone support because medicine wasn’t what she needed. Her hormonal symptoms were a reflection of depletion, lack of downtime and sleep, pollution with a bad diet and toxic personal care products.

If she’d gone to her pediatrician, she would have been prescribed birth control for acne and cramps (which often worsens mental health), and possibly stimulants for ADHD — without ever addressing what was driving her imbalance.

In the old ways of practicing naturopathic medicine the first rule was: what needs to be removed? What are the obstacles to cure? The body will right itself if given the right conditions, most of the time. Still stands the test of time.

Was she perfect at the plan? Of course not. Most adults wouldn’t be.

But her mom stayed engaged — role modelling, reminding, cheering her on and they probably stayed on track 85% of the time which was what it took to take the pressure off her system and get change. That partnership was the true medicine.

Over time, their family began slowing down, prioritizing quality food, and taking time to eat together. These changes precipitated a ripple effect that reshaped not just this girl’s health, but the family’s rhythm.

We can help our girls learn self-care early and I don’t mean pedicures and make up, but the kind that builds energy, stability, and confidence from the inside out.

When they start to connect those dots between how they eat, rest, and feel we’re not just treating symptoms, we’re getting into true life skills.

We’re teaching them how to steer their own ship. Learning to prioritize taking care of yourself young - I honestly don’t know what could be more valuable. 🌿
